It’s hard to believe that we are entering our third spring of a global pandemic, and facing these same mundane challenges are causing many of us fatigue. The good news is, as the temperature warms, the days grow longer, and nature emerges from its slumber, we feel the positive effects on our physical and mental health during this seasonal transition. While there are so many great benefits to embrace when spring arrives, it is also important to be prepared for the challenges of this magnificent season of awakenings.
Sunlight, in Moderation:
With longer days in these warmer months comes more sun exposure. The sun can be a real boost to our mood, as serotonin levels increase with sunlight. The human body also benefits from increased vitamin D production from sunlight. However, the sun’s harsh UV rays can have real negative effects including sunburn, premature aging, cellular damage, even skin cancer. Wearing light clothing, sunglasses, and a hat can help reduce these harmful effects. If using sunscreen always check the ingredients and sun protection factor before applying.
Get some Sleep:
Consistent quality sleep is vital to our wellbeing. Turning the clocks back in the Spring due to Daylight Savings Time can have a very negative effect on the body’s sleep patterns. To help ensure a strong sleep routine, you should avoid using caffeine later in the day, use room darkening shades, keep all electronics such as TV’s out of the bedroom, and make sure your mattress is still providing the proper support needed for rest. A lot of people tend to think happy hour is a great way to finish up the day, but having an alcoholic beverage before bedtime can disrupt sleep. Another major sleep disruptor is your cell phone, and endless scrolling through social media and email. When it’s time to turn in, it is time to turn off.
Beware of Allergies:
As the flowers and trees start to bloom they usher in the allergy season, complete with runny noses, itchy eyes, and even breathing difficulties. While it is tempting to open the windows to let fresh air in, this is not advised for those who suffer from seasonal allergies. Instead this is the time to make sure that your air conditioning unit has been serviced, and the filters have been replaced. A good spring cleaning may be in order to remove dust, mold, and other pollutants. It is also important after spending time outside that you wash your hands to prevent the transfer of pollen, and try showering before bedtime to remove any lingering irritants. Take a Spring Break:
Take a mental health spring break. Many think of spring break as a holiday for a high school or a college student, but there are great ways to have a spring break without the trip to Cancun, Florida or Disney World. Many local and national parks begin to offer easier access as spring approaches, and it is a great time of year to be outside, and explore some place new. Trying new things can also help give you a mental spring break, such as exploring a new trail, taking an art class, going to a concert, or shopping for a new spring accessory, or new look. For those that pack busy work, school, and/or home schedules, scheduling some alone time, or making time for a best friend, may help to improve your overall mood and outlook.
Time to Exercise:
The warmer temperatures are an invitation to get outside and exercise after a long winter and do your favorite activities including hiking, jogging, or walking the dog. We all know that exercise can be extremely beneficial to our health in many ways including, lowering blood pressure, keeping weight in check, strengthening our bodies, and boosting our moods. If you had a sedentary winter, it is important to start exercising slowly to avoid injury. Be sure to stretch properly before and after activity, replace worn out footwear, and increase your daily hydration. Skip the sugary sports drink and go for a good old fashion glass of water before and after workouts.
Add Fresh Produce:
As Spring is in the air, you will soon start to see your groceries and farmers markets brimming with fresh seasonal produce. Try incorporating these fresh food choices into your diet by searching for healthy simple recipes before your trip to the grocery stores. A healthy diet is never complete without fresh fruits and vegetables. Spring is a great time to look for cherries, apricots, strawberries, artichokes, peas, and radishes. Make sure to wash all fresh produce thoroughly as even organically grown produce may have pesticides or unwanted chemicals.
Adjust you Skin Care Routine:
The winter months call for heavier based moisturizers and lotions to keep the skin from becoming too dry.
